Spray Application Rate Calculator — Pesticide Dilution & Product Per Tank
Calculate the exact amount of pesticide product to add per tank load based on your label rate, tank size, and spray volume. This calculator handles both liquid concentrates and dry formulations, shows dilution rates, and flags applications that exceed the maximum label rate. Stop guessing and start spraying with confidence.
Inputs Explained
- Label Rate
- The manufacturer-recommended application rate from the product label, expressed as volume (mL/ha or fl oz/acre) for liquids or weight (g/ha or oz/acre) for dry formulations.
- Spray Volume
- The amount of carrier water applied per unit area. Typical values range from 100-400 L/ha (10-40 gal/acre) depending on canopy density and application method.
- Tank Size
- The total volume of your spray tank in liters or gallons. This determines how much area each tank load covers and how much product to add per fill.
- Field Area
- The total area you plan to spray. Used to calculate total product needed for the entire job.
- Maximum Label Rate
- Optional safety check. Enter the maximum rate from the product label to get a color-coded warning if your application rate approaches or exceeds legal limits.
How This Calculator Works
Worked Example
Applying a liquid herbicide at 500 mL/ha with a 200 L spray volume and a 500 L tank on a 20 ha field
- 1. Calculate area per tank
500 L tank / 200 L/ha spray volume = 2.5 ha per tank
- 2. Calculate product per tank
500 mL/ha x 2.5 ha = 1,250 mL (1.25 L) of product per tank fill
- 3. Calculate dilution rate
1,250 mL / 500 L = 2.5 mL of product per liter of carrier water
- 4. Calculate total product needed
500 mL/ha x 20 ha = 10,000 mL (10 L) total product for the job
Add 1.25 L of product per 500 L tank fill. You need 8 tank loads and 10 L of product total for 20 ha.
How to Interpret Your Results
| Condition | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Green — within safe limits | Your application rate is well below the maximum label rate. Proceed with application. |
| Amber — above 75% of max | You are approaching the maximum label rate. Verify that the higher rate is necessary for your target pest and crop stage. |
| Red — exceeds max label rate | Your rate exceeds the legal maximum. Reduce the label rate input. Applying above the label maximum is illegal and may damage crops or the environment. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing label rate with dilution rate
The label rate is product per area (mL/ha). The dilution rate is product per volume of carrier water (mL/L). They are different numbers — the calculator converts between them.
Using the wrong formulation units
Liquid concentrates use volume (mL, fl oz) while wettable powders use weight (g, oz). Check your product type and select the correct formulation.
Not accounting for different spray volumes
Changing your spray volume changes the dilution rate but not the total product per area. If you switch from 200 L/ha to 300 L/ha, you need the same total product but more diluted in each tank.
